the basics

PRODUCTION I.G. says:

Hagi - A tall and impeccably handsome cello player, who seems to know Saya from before, but everything else remains a mystery. He holds the key to Saya's destiny.

INTRODUCTION
This section is relatively spoiler-free; addresses the happenings of ep. 1)

Tall, dark and quietly handsome, Hagi remains a mystery through even the later episodes of Blood+. He initially appears as a sidewalk performer playing cello to a small audience; upon hearing the song he is playing (J.S. Bach's Suite for violoncello solo no.5 [BWV1011]), Saya has a sudden flashback to a time she cannot remember. In many ways, the memory evoked by Hagi's cello presents the turning point in the current Saya's peaceful life in Okinawa.

He awakens more than just Saya's memories, however. Hagi is also responsible for reawakening the Saya of the past, the Saya who fights against the Chiropterans. His actions in the first episode of Blood+ alone give rise to numerous questions: Why does he reawaken Saya? What are his ties to Saya's past? What of his own past? And what about that bandaged right hand with which he holds his bow?
